How E-cigarette work? A simple explanation.

Electronic cigarettes entered the market in 2003, and have come a long way since then. Earlier models looked like traditional tobacco cigarettes, but now you can find them in all shapes and sizes. However, some of them still look like normal cigarettes for example the Mig Vapor Mig Cig starter kits. Although they have become very popular in the recent years, many people still don’t know exactly how Electronic cigarettes work.

Electronic cigarettes deliver nicotine without the harmful effects of tar and thousands of other chemicals found in tobacco. Nicotine in eCigs is synthetic and derived from natural sources instead of tobacco. Studies show that Electronic cigarettes can be 95% safer than tobacco cigarettes.

When inhaled, Electronic cigarettes produce water vapor which feels, and looks pretty much like the actual tobacco cigarettes, however, evaporates instantly into the air. Also, unlike the obnoxious smell of smoke, it smells good like mint, candy, vanilla or whatever the flavor of the e-liquid it.

Before we discuss how Electronic cigarettes work, let’s take a quick look at their different parts.

Rechargeable Battery

Most Electronic cigarettes come with a rechargeable Lithium battery, some can be charged using a USB cord for added convenience while others support an exclusive charger. Batteries can also have an indicator light connected to them that illuminates when the user takes a drag or pull, simulating the burning tip of a real cigarette.

Atomizer/Cartomizer/Clearomizer

Atomizer, cartomizer, and clearomizer do the same thing but are slightly different from each other depending on their design. Atomizer is the original design, which is becoming obsolete now. It mainly consists of a coil and requires the user to continuously drip e-juice onto it. Cartomizer combines cartridge and atomizer, and have a polyfill wrapped around a heating coil. The polyfill soaks e-juice and allows extended vaping sessions. Some cartomizers are housed inside a cylindrical tank, which can hold more juice and allow longer sessions. Clearomizer is basically a clear cartomizer featuring clear polycarbonate plastic or Pyrex glass tank, which lets the user see how much juice is left in the tank. They’re quickly becoming popular as they let you view the remaining e-juice in the tank, and avoid the burnt taste by refilling it before you run out of juice.

Flavored Nicotine Cartridge/E-Liquid

eCigs can have a refillable tank, in which you can put your favorite e-liquid, or disposable flavored nicotine cartridge. They come with different flavors and nicotine strengths, usually between 0-4%.

Circuitry

Circuitry is the brain of the device. It consists of a smart power control board and a sensor, which activates the atomizer when you take a pull.

Mouthpiece

It’s the part of the e-cig that you use to inhale the vapor from.

Exactly how E-Cigs Work?

Now you know the different parts of an e-cig, let’s put the pieces of the puzzle together.

When you take draws on the mouthpiece, e-juice from the cartridge is absorbed into the mesh reservoir because of gravity and capillary action. The cartridge holds the liquid which is then absorbed by a wick, while the coil is also heating up at the same time. When the vapor gets in contact with the hot wick – which has a temperature higher than the boiling point of the e-juice – the liquid turns into vapor and is drawn through the mouthpiece.

Some eCigs feature a fire button, which when pressed, activates the device. However, in this case, the atomizer vaporizes only the amount of liquid that was already in the heating element. You will have to inhale on to the mouthpiece to draw more liquid into the heating pot or the wick.

The user inhales vapor, which provides nicotine and a sensation similar to smoking. When the user exhales, big clouds of vapor come out which quickly dissipate into the air and carry the subtle smell of vanilla, candy, mint, raspberry or any other flavoring agent in the e-juice.
